The newly elected Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County, James Leku Pili, has today taken the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of a Member of Parliament, formally assuming his parliamentary duties.

Leku, who was elected on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, took the two oaths before Parliament, paving the way for him to take his seat, participate in parliamentary debates and vote on matters before the House.

Under Article 81(4) of the 1995 Constitution, every Member of Parliament is required to take the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of a Member of Parliament before assuming their duties.

The Oath of Allegiance commits an MP to uphold, preserve and defend the Constitution and the Republic of Uganda, while the parliamentary oath pledges faithful service to Parliament and support for the Constitution.

Leku was elected in the Adjumani West County by-election held on September 17 following the death of former Second Deputy Prime Minister and veteran military general Moses Ali, who died aged 87 on July 18, 2026.

According to results declared by the Electoral Commission, Leku won the election with 12,423 votes, representing 83 percent of the total votes cast. He defeated independent candidate Gasper Draga, who garnered 2,559 votes, representing 17 percent.

In his maiden speech, Leku pledged to follow in the footsteps of the late Moses Ali by continuing to champion development in the constituency.

He identified the rehabilitation and improvement of the Yumbe–Adjumani road as one of his key priorities, alongside other development initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of his constituents.
