Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises, COSASE, has raised concern over 136 court cases against the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), carrying a potential liability of Shs777 billion.
The committee, chaired by Hon. Muwada Nkunyingi, raised the concern while meeting UETCL officials to scrutinise the Auditor General’s report for the financial year 2024/2025.
Of the total contingent liability, approximately Shs500 billion arises from a case filed by UMEME, which is currently before a court in London.
The MPs warned that the numerous lawsuits could place a significant financial burden on UETCL and, ultimately, have implications for public finances and the delivery of electricity services.
The committee also observed that a substantial number of the disputes relate to land acquisition, contract management and administrative issues, which it said could have been avoided through better management and stronger internal systems.
COSASE has consequently urged UETCL to strengthen its management and dispute-resolution systems to prevent avoidable litigation and minimise the risk of exposing the company and taxpayers to substantial financial losses.
