The driver of a bus that collided with a train in a fatal crash that claimed the life of a student is facing 44 charges, including reckless driving, causing death by reckless driving, causing bodily injury and causing damage to a train.

Police Traffic Spokesperson Michael Kananura identified the driver as Christopher Kikomeko, who was arrested in Mukono on Sunday following investigations into the July 10 crash.

The accident occurred at about 6:30am when a Friendship Coaches bus carrying students of Mwebaza High School in Kakiri, Wakiso District, collided with a train.

According to Kananura, Kikomeko faces one count of reckless driving, one count of causing death by reckless driving, 40 counts of causing bodily injury and one count of causing damage to the train.

He is expected to appear in court to answer the charges.

Meanwhile, police have reported another fatal crash in Ladun, Napak District, along the Soroti-Moroto Highway, which left three people dead and 12 others injured.

The crash, which occurred on August 29, involved a Fuso truck, registration number UBH 543, travelling from Tororo with cattle and passengers being carried on top of the vehicle.

Police said a front tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control of the truck, which overturned several times.

Three people died at the scene, while 12 others were injured. Police are searching for the driver.

Kananura has warned truck operators against carrying passengers on goods vehicles, saying the practice is illegal and puts lives at risk.
