Parliament has observed a moment of silence in honour of veteran Ugandan playwright, director and actor Alex Mukulu, who passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the age of 72.
The moment of silence was led by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who described Mukulu as a key figure in the development and growth of Uganda’s creative industry.
Born in 1954 in Misebe, Ssingo County, Mukulu was widely celebrated for pioneering protest theatre in Uganda and using drama to address social and political issues.
He is remembered for acclaimed productions including 30 Years of Bananas and Wounds of Africa, which earned him recognition as one of Uganda’s influential theatre practitioners.
Mukulu died at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital.
According to a tentative funeral programme released by his family and the organising committee, the veteran playwright will be laid to rest on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Kijjabijjo along Gayaza Road.
