At least 150 public servants have been interdicted over alleged mismanagement of government resources in various local governments across the country.
The Minister of State for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, says 40 of the affected officials have already been arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court, while nine case files are ready for presentation before court.
Barugahara says another 24 files are still being completed, while 30 others remain under investigation, excluding cases from the West Nile and Budaka regions.
The Minister made the revelation while appearing before the Local Government Committee of Parliament, chaired by Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze.
Barugahara told the committee that inspections and assessments carried out in various local governments had uncovered widespread mismanagement of government resources.
He appealed to Members of Parliament to support government’s efforts to fight corruption, warning that continued misuse of public resources could undermine the country’s development.
Meanwhile, the Local Government Committee has commended Barugahara for taking steps to curb corruption but cautioned him to ensure that all actions taken against public servants strictly comply with the law.
Committee Chairperson Betty Nambooze said the committee wants officials who have allegedly been arrested to actually appear before court, warning that without clear procedures and proper legal action, officials removed from their positions could eventually return to office without facing consequences.
The committee has therefore urged the Ministry of Local Government to expedite investigations and ensure that all suspects found culpable are brought before courts of law.
