The Ministry of Health is set to launch the Uganda Nutrition Profile Model to help tackle the growing burden of unhealthy diets, obesity and non-communicable diseases.
Speaking at a media breakfast meeting at the Lourdel Upper Boardroom today, Director of Public Health Dr Daniel Kyabayinze said the model will provide a scientific basis for assessing foods based on their nutritional composition.
Kyabayinze said Uganda is facing a “double burden” of malnutrition, with undernutrition existing alongside rising rates of overweight, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
He attributed part of the shift to increased consumption of ultra-processed foods high in added sugars, sodium and unhealthy fats.
The model is expected to guide restrictions on the aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods, particularly those targeting children. It will also support clearer front-of-pack nutrition labelling and guide the procurement of healthier foods in schools, hospitals and other public institutions.
Kyabayinze said the model will help strengthen efforts to create a healthier food environment and reduce the long-term burden of diet-related diseases.
The Uganda Nutrition Profile Model will be officially launched tomorrow during the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week at Mulago Nursing School.
