The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has expressed concern over the health condition of its founding president, Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the VIP Wing of Mulago National Referral Hospital.
The concerns follow an incident last week in which Dr. Besigye collapsed in the dock during proceedings before High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma at the Criminal Division.
During the hearing, Besigye objected to the commencement of his trial, arguing that he lacked legal representation.
Lawyers assigned to represent him under the state brief scheme told the court they had not received instructions from either Besigye or his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutale. The two are expected to return to court on 4 August 2026.
Speaking at the party headquarters, FDC Deputy President for the Western Region, Robert Centenary, said Dr. Besigye dedicated a significant part of his life to serving Uganda during the bush war that brought the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to power, adding that political differences should not overshadow that contribution.
Centenary also called for politics to be kept out of the courts and urged the military to refrain from political involvement. He was referring to a social media post by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba in which the army chief said he wanted Besigye hanged.
He appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to reflect on Dr. Besigye’s contribution to the country and ensure he receives appropriate medical care before returning to court.
