The Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja has initiated discussions on the best way forward for the successful implementation of the National Cleaning Day.
Over the weekend Technical teams from the Department of Strategic Coordination and Implementation, together with the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, engaged with a team from Green Action for Sustainable Production purposely to share ideas on how to protect the environment and implementation of the national cleaning exercise.
The organization brings together major manufacturers, including Uganda Breweries, Pepsi Cola, Coca-Cola, Mukwano, and Hariss International, to promote effective packaging waste management.
The Discussions also focused on how manufacturers can contribute to the success of the National Cleaning Day initiative.
The National Cleaning exercise announced on 22nd July and implemented on 25th July 2026 that last Saturday of the month experienced a lot of unforeseen challenges.
Although it marked significant impact and success at its start but it also exposed serious loopholes that need to be fixed before the second National Cleaning exercise come the 29th August 2026 the last Saturday of the month.
Among other loopholes noticed were; lack of tools to be used in the cleaning exercise, garbage collected along the roads has to date remained at the collection points compromising the health and hygiene of the communities not forgetting the excessive force employed by the security forces while enforcing the directive.
Meanwhile The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is planning to establish a central garbage collection point in every village across the city after the inaugural National Cleaning Day exposed weaknesses in Kampala’s waste collection system. Speaking during the weekly Weyonje cleanup exercise in Lubuga, Okiligi and Kakungulu zones in Kibuli Parish, Makindye Division, KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki acknowledged that some waste generated during the National Cleaning Day was still being collected.
According to Buzeki, the arrangement will allow garbage trucks to collect waste from central locations rather than navigating numerous scattered dumping points, significantly reducing collection time and improving efficiency.
The city generates an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 tonnes of waste daily, but the Authority and its support teams from the private garbage collectors only collect 1500 to 2,000 tonnes leaving almost 1500 tonnes uncollected because of inadequate collection infrastructure, illegal dumping and limited disposal capacity.
