The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Parliamentary Caucus has warned against what it describes as attempts to undermine the party’s recognized leadership, insisting that Jimmy Akena remains the legitimate president of the party.
The caucus’s position follows statements made last week by members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), including Michael Mawanda and David Kabanda, who said they would support efforts to remove Akena after Dennis Adim claimed to be the rightful president of the UPC.
Addressing journalists at Parliament, UPC Parliamentary Whip Yunis Opio said the party would not recognize any leader installed through external influence, maintaining that Akena is the only legitimate president of the Uganda People’s Congress.
Opio said the UPC Parliamentary Caucus remains firmly behind the current party leadership and rejected what it described as attempts by individuals outside the party to interfere in its internal affairs.
The caucus also distanced itself from statements made by what it termed “opportunists” seeking to exploit the party’s ongoing leadership dispute, reiterating its commitment to the party’s constitutional processes for resolving internal matters.
