Professional accountants have been challenged to take a leading role in driving Uganda’s ambitious plan to expand the economy to $500 billion by promoting integrity, embracing innovation, and strengthening accountability across both the public and private sectors.
The call was made by Joseph Enyimu, Commissioner for Economic Development Policy and Research at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, while representing Permanent Secretary Ramathan Ggoobi at the opening of the 14th Economic Forum organized by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
Speaking under the theme “Powering Uganda’s 500 Billion Future,” Enyimu said accountants occupy a strategic position in safeguarding transparency, promoting responsible financial management, and supporting sound decision-making in government and the private sector.
He described accountants as custodians of financial discipline and urged members of the profession to demonstrate the courage required to uphold ethical standards even when faced with pressure.
Enyimu warned that organizations can only undermine accountability when accountants fail to adhere to the principles and professional values that guide the profession.
He called on accountants to use their expertise to support sustainable economic growth and help build stronger institutions capable of delivering Uganda’s long-term development goals.
