Police have identified Iganga District as a hotspot for cyber fraud following the arrest of seven suspects accused of impersonating President Yoweri Museveni’s daughter, Natasha Museveni Karugire, to defraud members of the public through fake financial assistance schemes.
Addressing journalists on Monday, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the suspects, most of them aged between 15 and 21, were arrested during a joint security operation targeting online scam networks in the district.
Police also recovered nine mobile phones believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities, and said investigations into the wider network are ongoing.
Rusoke noted that this marks the second major crackdown on similar scams in Iganga this year.
In February, four other suspects were arrested in connection with a scheme that falsely promised victims access to financial support from Natasha Museveni Karugire in exchange for registration and processing fees.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and verify any claims involving government-related financial assistance, warning that legitimate programmes do not require advance payments.
Police say security agencies remain committed to dismantling persistent cybercrime networks operating in the region.
