The Chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection, Patrick Kiconco, has welcomed government’s allocation of Sh173.55 billion for social protection in the 2026/27 national budget.
Speaking to the press on Friday morning, Kiconco said that out of the total allocation, Sh15.5 billion has been earmarked for the child disability benefit. He noted that the provision acknowledges the additional costs faced by children with disabilities, including care, transport, and assistive devices.
He further disclosed that 3.5% of children aged 2–4 years and 7.5% of those aged 15–17 live with disabilities, while 44% of Ugandan children experience multidimensional poverty.
The Executive Director of the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda, Esther Kyozira, also welcomed the funding, describing it as a vital intervention to support vulnerable groups and improve their quality of life.
