Airtel Uganda, in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, has officially launched the 22nd edition of the Airtel Masaza Cup football tournament, with organizers calling for unity, discipline, and youth participation for a successful competition.
This year’s tournament is being held under the theme: “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight to End HIV/AIDS by 2030.”
The Airtel Masaza Cup remains one of Buganda Kingdom’s premier grassroots football competitions, bringing together the 18 counties (Masaza) in a celebration of culture, unity, and sporting talent.
Speaking at the launch at Bulange Mengo, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, said the tournament was established to promote unity among the Kabaka’s subjects, create employment opportunities, and nurture football talent across the kingdom.
Mayiga urged young people, especially players, to become ambassadors in the fight against HIV/AIDS, while using the platform to advance their personal, social, and economic development.
The Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, Som Soumendra, expressed appreciation for the continued partnership, describing the Masaza Cup as a powerful tool for unity and youth empowerment that brings together all 18 counties to celebrate shared heritage and develop talent.
Meanwhile, Centenary Bank has contributed Shs 200 million towards the 2026 edition of the tournament, reaffirming its commitment to community development and grassroots sports. The Chief Manager Marketing at Centenary Bank, Immaculate Nkurumi, said the Buganda Kingdom continues to champion initiatives that promote health and socio-economic development, calling for collective support.
The tournament will kick off in Mubende, where Buwekula will face Kyadondo at the Mubende NTC Playground on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
