Taxi Drivers Urged to Strengthen Ebola Prevention Measures Amid Rising Cases

Taxi drivers and passengers across Uganda have been urged to take a leading role in the fight against Ebola following the confirmation of nine cases in the country.

According to health authorities, Uganda has so far recorded nine confirmed Ebola cases, including one death, as efforts to contain the outbreak continue.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns that complacency in observing preventive measures could fuel further transmission and potentially compel the government to reintroduce stricter public health interventions.

Speaking to journalists in Kampala, Muhammad Ssempijja, a driver and leader at Namyiba Taxi Park, emphasized the critical role public transport operators can play in curbing the spread of the deadly virus.

Ssempijja called on fellow drivers to enforce strict hygiene practices by ensuring that all passengers sanitize or wash their hands before boarding taxis and entering taxi parks.

He also encouraged drivers to take personal responsibility by purchasing hand sanitizers and making them readily available in their vehicles.

However, he appealed to the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to support taxi operators by providing essential prevention materials, including water containers, hand sanitizers, and temperature screening equipment.

He further urged all Ugandans, particularly those who rely on public transport, to remain vigilant and adhere to guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health, warning that even a single lapse in preventive measures could contribute to further spread of the disease.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while intensifying surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns aimed at containing the outbreak.
