Five people, including four nurses, have recovered from the Ebola virus and been discharged from a specialized treatment facility in Bunia, Ituri Province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to the latest information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The recovered patients had contracted the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which is responsible for the latest outbreak in the country.
As of Sunday, health authorities had reported 210 confirmed cases of Ebola infection and 17 confirmed deaths.
Nearly 350 suspected cases remain under investigation, while 16 health workers have contracted the virus during the current outbreak.
Since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, response efforts have focused on laboratory testing, disease surveillance, infection prevention and control, community engagement, and resource mobilization.
In Bunia, believed to be the epicentre of the outbreak and the capital of Ituri Province, WHO has handed over a refurbished Ebola Treatment Centre to local health authorities.
The facility currently has 24 operational beds and a total capacity of 60 beds.
WHO is also establishing an additional annex with capacity for up to 42 beds to strengthen the treatment response as health authorities continue efforts to contain the outbreak.
Officials say the expansion of treatment facilities and ongoing surveillance measures are critical to preventing further transmission and improving patient outcomes.
