A section of Members of the 12th Parliament has called for an increase in the budget allocated for foreign travel to ensure equal opportunities for legislators in executing their parliamentary duties.
Kasanda District Woman MP Rebecca Atukunda said the high number of MPs serving on limited parliamentary committees, coupled with inadequate travel funding, could leave some legislators missing out on official foreign trips.
Speaking during the ongoing orientation for Members of the 12th Parliament, which started on Tuesday and ends tomorrow, Friday, May 29, 2026, Atukunda stressed that such trips are important for benchmarking and learning, adding that every MP deserves an opportunity to participate.
Responding to the concerns, Deputy Clerk to Parliament Henry Waiswa Yoweri said Parliament operates within a fixed budget framework, noting that committee chairpersons are mandated to select members for official travel assignments.
