Mufti Mubajje Questions Low Muslim Representation in New Cabinet Appointments

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, has expressed dissatisfaction over the limited number of Muslims appointed to ministerial positions in President Yoweri Museveni’s newly announced cabinet.

President Museveni recently unveiled a list of 51 cabinet ministers for his current term, with only eight Muslim appointees included.

Some of the Muslim ministers named in the appointments include Third Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Nakadama, Minister for Kampala Hajjati Minsa Kabanda, Minister of State for Privatization under the Ministry of Finance Amina Mukalazi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, and Minister of State for Water and Environment Aisha Sekindi, among others.

Speaking while leading Eid al-Adha prayers at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council headquarters in Old Kampala, Mufti Mubajje urged the appointing authority to consider greater balance and inclusivity in future cabinet selections.

He also called on those appointed to diligently serve the country by supporting government programs, promoting national unity, and avoiding actions that could divide Ugandans.

At the same gathering, the newly appointed Minister for Kampala, Hajjati Minsa Kabanda, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for reappointing her to the role.

She pledged to prioritize key urban challenges, including flooding caused by poor drainage systems and inadequate garbage management in the city.

Kabanda, who is yet to be sworn in, said addressing these issues will be among her immediate priorities once she formally assumes office.
