The newly sworn-in Mayor of Makindye Division, Yasin Omar, has pledged to revive Local Council One and Two courts to handle minor disputes and restore order at the grassroots level.
Speaking at Makindye Division headquarters after taking oath alongside councillors, Omar said LC1 and LC2 courts are vital in shaping society and resolving small cases quickly.
He expressed concern that police had taken over responsibilities originally meant for LC1 courts, rendering the local structures ineffective. Omar served as an LC1 chairperson for more than 20 years before being elected division mayor.
The mayor also vowed to crack down on individuals allegedly posing as Kampala Capital City Authority law enforcement officers at night to extort money from roadside traders.
Omar further pledged to closely monitor government programmes and funds under the Parish Development Model and Emyooga to ensure residents benefit equitably.
He also promised to work across party lines, saying he would appoint a cabinet comprising members from the National Unity Platform, independents and the National Resistance Movement. According to Omar, the cabinet will include one NUP councillor, one independent councillor and two NRM councillors.
Omar said he would prioritize rebuilding the Makindye Division headquarters to match the division’s status, noting that the original plan was for a four-storey building, but only two floors were completed.
He added that he intends to introduce ordinances aimed at improving service delivery in the division.
Makindye Division is made up of 44 councillors and one mayor, bringing the total number of leaders to 45.
