Bishop Kibira Calls for Church–Government Partnership to Combat Plastic Pollution

The Bishop of Kasese Diocese, Rt. Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira

The Bishop of Kasese Diocese, Rt. Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira, has urged local government leaders to work closely with the Church in tackling the growing challenge of plastic pollution.

Speaking at the launch of the Uganda Martyrs Memorial Forest at Uganda Martyrs Catholic Church Nyakasanga in Kasese Diocese—an event organized by Caritas Uganda—Bishop Kibira emphasized the long-term environmental dangers posed by plastic waste.

He noted that plastics can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, degrading soil quality and contaminating water sources.

The bishop called for the establishment of plastic collection centers to facilitate proper waste management and recycling, saying such initiatives would help protect vital ecosystems, including Lake George.

Bishop Kibira further encouraged collaboration among local leaders, schools, and communities, stressing that collective action is essential to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for future generations.
