Doctors Sue Government Over Withdrawal of Medical Intern Allowances

Uganda Medical Association has filed a case in the High Court of Uganda challenging the government’s decision to withdraw medical intern allowances

The Uganda Medical Association has filed a case in the High Court of Uganda challenging the government’s decision to withdraw medical intern allowances, citing multiple human rights violations against doctors.

The association argues that the move has significantly affected the welfare and morale of medical workers across the country, noting that it undermines the rights of doctors already working under challenging conditions.

Through their lawyer, Jane Namaganda, the doctors contend that the government’s actions amount to a denial of their rights.

They are also seeking a court order for a physical inspection of hospitals to assess the working conditions faced by affected staff.

In addition, the association is calling on the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance to reinstate the allowances.

The Ministry of Health had earlier withdrawn allowances for medical interns and senior house officers, a decision that has sparked concern within the medical community.
