The Kasese Chief Magistrate’s Court has directed prison authorities to provide immediate medical attention to suspects linked to the November 2025 attacks on military installations in the Rwenzori region.
The suspects are facing multiple charges including treason, terrorism, murder, attempted murder, terrorism financing, and aggravated robbery. A total of 102 suspects appeared before His Worship George Mfitundinda via Zoom from Malukhu Government Prison in Mbale.
During the proceedings, several suspects showed signs of illness, while others reported they had not received adequate medical care.
In response, the magistrate ordered prison authorities to transport the unwell suspects to health facilities within Mbale District to ensure they receive proper treatment.
The decision followed submissions from defense counsel Barnabas Tinkasiimire of Victoria and Co. Advocates, who reported that some clients had visible wounds and scars, raising concerns of possible torture.
The prosecution, led by Resident State Attorney Godfrey Oundo, did not oppose the defense request, acknowledging that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right.
The court also directed prison authorities in Mbale—where most of the male suspects are held—to facilitate access to improved medical services within the district.
The suspects, previously transferred from Mubuku to Luzira Prison and Malukhu Government Prison, are scheduled to return to court for mention on May 13, 2026.
