Uganda to Launch National Internet Exchange as Over 500 Illicit Websites Are Shut Down

State Minister for ICT, Godfrey Baluku Kabyanga

The Government of Uganda is set to launch the National Internet Protocol Exchange, a major step in advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda.

State Minister for ICT, Godfrey Baluku Kabyanga, announced the development while addressing the press at the Uganda Media Centre. He said the initiative is expected to improve service delivery and significantly reduce internet costs.

Kabyanga explained that Uganda currently lacks a local exchange point, meaning much of its internet traffic is routed outside the country before returning—resulting in delays and higher expenses.

The National IP Peering Exchange will allow local networks to interconnect directly within Uganda, making data exchange faster, more efficient, and more affordable for users.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has intensified its crackdown on online content deemed inappropriate.

UCC Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Bossa, revealed that over 500 websites promoting illicit material on social media have been shut down in a bid to address rising public concern over immorality.

Dr. Annet Kezabu, chairperson of the Pornographic Control Committee, described the move as a significant milestone in enforcing the Anti-Pornography Act.

She added that increasing levels of indiscipline in society point to challenges in parenting.
