Ggaba Daycare killer – Okello Onyum remanded to Luzira

The prime suspect in a gruesome attack at the Ggaba Daycare Centre killings, Christopher Okello Onyum, has appeared before the Makindye Grade One Magistrate Idah Nanjala for formal communication of charges.

Okello faces four counts of murder contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act.

The 39-year-old, who appeared unshaken was arraigned before court around 4.00pm on Tuesday 7th April afternoon and was remanded to Luzira prison.

Prosecution alleges Okello killed four toddlers with malice aforethought at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre on April 2, 2026: Eteku Gideon, Keisha Agenoroth, Sseruynage Ignatius, and Odeke Rayan.

They read for him four charges of murder however; he has been barred from pleading to the capital offences of murder, which are tried by only the High Court.

The magistrate informed Okello of his rights, including state-funded legal aid and bail application rights. Prosecutors Jonathan Muwaganya and Anna Kiiza said police inquiries are almost complete; Okello returns to court Wednesday 8th April 2026 at 3 PM.

Earlier in the morning, he had appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrates’ Court to record a confession statement, but he declined.

Early in the day at thePolice Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said the primary goal of the ongoing investigations is to ensure justice for the victims.

Rusoke also indicated that Onyum’s mental status will be assessed during court proceedings, in line with legal requirements.

Meanwhile, Rusoke has further noted that police have taken interest in a video circulating on social media, in which a woman alleges that Onyomu was responsible for the death of her one-year-old son in 2019, a case she claims did not receive justice.

He says this information in a video circulating on social media shows a woman claiming her one-year-old son was murdered by the suspect; case file 003/19 reportedly missing at CID, will be reviewed as part of the broader investigation.
