A Catholic priest in Luweero District has raised concern over corruption in the judiciary and increasing encroachment on church land, calling for urgent action during this year’s Good Friday observances.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Balikuddembe, Assistant Parish Priest of Kasana Cathedral in the Luweero Diocese, said many Ugandans are subjected to unfair judgments due to corruption within the justice system.
He also highlighted the growing problem of illegal occupation of church land, urging Christians to pray and take a stand against such challenges.
His remarks were made during the Ecumenical Public Way of the Cross, which drew hundreds of Christians from the Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox churches.
The procession began at Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace Cathedral in Kasana, bringing together worshippers from different denominations in a joint act of commemoration.
The Catholic group was led by Bishop Lawrence Mukasa, while the Anglican faithful were led by Bishop Wilson Kisekka. The Orthodox community was represented by Rev. Fr. Dimitrios Sserugunda.
Participants processed through Kasana and Luweero towns along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, carrying a cross and making several stopovers for prayers, before concluding at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Luweero.
Speaking at the start of the event, Msgr. Vincent De Paul Mukiibi welcomed participants and called for a reflective and orderly procession.
Bishop Mukasa led the procession by carrying the cross at the first station, followed by Bishop Kisekka and Fr. Sserugunda, while other participants, including Luweero District LC V Chairperson Erasto Kibirango, also took turns carrying the cross.
At each stop, participants paused for prayers and reflections as they commemorated the Way of the Cross.
