Traffic Offences Drop by 24.4% in Uganda Despite Rise in Fatal Crashes

2025 Police Annual Crime Report

A 24.4 percent reduction in traffic offences has been recorded in the 2025 Police Annual Crime Report, according to Lawrence Nuwabiine, Director of Traffic and Road Safety.

Presenting the report, Nuwabiine revealed that 322,441 traffic-related cases were registered in 2025, a significant drop from 426,432 cases recorded in 2024.

He attributed the decline largely to intensified road safety education campaigns that have been rolled out nationwide since 2021.

The strategy, he explained, focused on grassroots engagement, involving religious leaders, opinion leaders, and school children to promote responsible road use.

Despite the progress, drink driving remains the most common traffic offence.

However, the report also highlights a concerning rise in road crashes, with 26,044 incidents recorded in 2025. Of these, 13,563 were serious crashes involving injuries, while 7,879 were classified as minor. Fatal crashes increased by 3.8 percent to 4,602 cases.

Nuwabiine pointed to several tragic highway accidents as contributing factors to the rise in fatalities. He also noted that most crashes occur during evening rush hours, particularly between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

He urged continued public awareness and greater caution among road users to help curb road carnage and sustain the gains made in reducing traffic offences.
