Nakawa Court Grants Bail to NUP’s John Mary Ssebuwufu

The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to John Mary Ssebuwufu, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Election Committee and the Lord Councillor for Nakawa Division, after he spent several months in prison.

Ssebuwufu had been held incommunicado for over three weeks before being formally charged on February 6, 2026, with incitement to violence, contrary to Section 79(1) of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128.

Appearing in court today, the NUP Vice President for the Buganda Region was granted UShs 500,000 cash bail. He was also directed to deposit his passport with the court, and each of his sureties was bonded at UShs 5 million non-cash.

Additionally, the court instructed Ssebuwufu to upload his National ID to the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS).

However, he informed the court that his ID had been lost during his arrest, which occurred the day before the January 15, 2026, General Election.
