More than 100 trucks are currently stranded at the Mpondwe border post in Kasese District as drivers struggle to obtain clearance to enter the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The congestion has been linked to restricted movement across the Bunagana border crossing in Kisoro District following renewed clashes between Congolese government forces and the M23 around Goma.
Since late January 2025, M23 rebels have maintained control over parts of Goma, prompting intensified military operations by the Congolese army, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC). These operations have included drone strikes and targeted killings, such as the recent assassination of M23’s military spokesperson Willy Ngoma in Rubaya.
Truck drivers say that although M23 fighters controlling areas around Bunagana had previously allowed them to enter the DRC, recent drone strikes by government forces have made the route too dangerous, forcing them to abandon it.
At Mpondwe border post, drivers report delays lasting several days as they attempt to navigate complex clearance procedures involving the Uganda Revenue Authority and other security agencies.
Jimmy Kakule, a truck driver from the DRC who was transporting goods from Kampala, said he had already spent two days waiting for clearance.
He also expressed concern over the lack of proper parking facilities at the border, saying the area has become unsafe for both drivers and cargo as thieves take advantage of the congestion to steal goods.
Meanwhile, Sylvester Mapizo, the LCIII Chairperson for Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, said the ongoing conflict and security threats along the border continue to disrupt cross-border trade in the region, affecting livelihoods and regional stability.
