The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has challenged government to refrain from politicizing the upcoming Local Council elections.
The government recently announced that elections for Local Council I (LC I), Local Council II (LC II), and Women Councils will be held in March and April 2026.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters, spokesperson Sharon Arach emphasized that LC I chairpersons are the first point of contact between government and citizens, handling critical community issues.
She urged residents to carefully choose leaders who are responsible and committed to serving them without outside influence.
Sharon described LC I leaders as the backbone of local governance, noting that their role as the initial link between citizens and government institutions makes it essential to keep their elections free from political interference.
She also warned against voter apathy, stressing that the quality of leadership at the village level directly affects the effectiveness of services delivered in communities.
Sharon called on UPC members to actively participate and encouraged Ugandans to vote for the party.
