The Catholic Church has lost a distinguished priest, teacher, and mentor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Herman Kituuma of Masaka Diocese.
He passed away this morning in Masaka at the age of 70.
Over a remarkable forty-two-year ministry, Rev. Fr. Dr. Kituuma made lasting contributions to the Church through his pastoral work, academic scholarship, and dedication to formation.
Born on March 16, 1956, to the late Paul Mujuzi and Angelina Nanyonga, he joined Bukalasa Minor Seminary at the age of 14. He was ordained on August 15, 1984, and first served as a curate at Nkoni Parish before becoming parish priest at Mannya Parish.
Fr. Kituuma later served as private secretary to Bishop Adrian K. Ddungu and taught at Ggaba Pastoral Centre in Eldoret. He was then sent to Rome for doctoral studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), specializing in Biblical studies.
Upon earning his doctorate in 2006, he returned to Masaka Diocese and was appointed Rector of Katigondo National Major Seminary, a role he held from 2007 to June 2023. During his tenure, he taught Biblical Greek and courses on both the Old and New Testaments, shaping generations of priests with his knowledge and discipline.
After retiring from Katigondo, Fr. Kituuma traveled to the United States for rest. Soon after his arrival, he was hospitalized with diabetes, which led to a double amputation in December 2023, leaving him in a wheelchair.
Fr. Kituuma is remembered for his profound prayer life, dedication to academia, disciplined work ethic, and love for farming, which remained central to his priestly life and ministry.
Burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.
