Caritas Uganda, the social arm of the Catholic Church in Uganda, today hosted interfaith women and organizations at Mitala Maria Parish to commemorate International Women’s Day, ahead of the National Women’s Day celebrations scheduled for Sunday, 8th March at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
As part of its environmental and health initiatives, Caritas Uganda has championed a tree-planting campaign to help counter natural disasters such as droughts and floods, while promoting nutrition through the planting of fruit and medicinal trees.
Three acres of land were allocated for three categories of trees—timber, fruit, and herbal medicine. Tree seedlings were planted by Caritas Uganda staff, partner organizations, and Catholic institutions, including St. Anthony Mitala Maria Health Centre III, St. Balikuddembe Secondary School, and St. Teresa Primary School in Mitala Maria.
The campaign was officially launched by the Episcopal Vicar and Parish Priest of Mitala Maria, Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier Kikomeko, who commended Caritas Uganda for its commitment to environmental stewardship and the protection of Mother Earth.
In addition, women participants showcased their arts and crafts, and benefited from legal aid and medical clinics organized by professional women, highlighting empowerment, health, and community engagement as key themes of the event.
