MPs Urge Judiciary to Uphold Independence Amid Alleged Political Interference

Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Gorreth Namugga

Members of Parliament have called on the Judiciary to safeguard its independence and resist external pressures, following concerns over the alleged recruitment and deployment of NRM carders within the courts.

MPs warn that such practices could be influencing rulings and undermining public confidence in the justice system.

The concerns were raised during a session of the Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Gorreth Namugga, who cautioned that failing to address these issues may drive citizens to seek justice outside the courts.

Namugga urged the Judiciary to ensure fair dispensing of justice, guided by principles of equity and humanity.

The remarks came during a meeting attended by Judiciary officials, led by Permanent Secretary Pius Bigirimana.

In response, PS Bigirimana denied any knowledge of judges being recruited based on political affiliations, noting that recruitment falls under the purview of the Judicial Service Commission.
