The President of the Bible Society of Uganda, Justice Mike Chibita, has warned that unhealthy marriages are among the leading causes of mental health challenges and violence in the country.
He made the remarks while addressing the press in Kampala ahead of the Kampala Marriage Conference 2026, scheduled for Friday, 13th March at Hotel Africa in Kampala. The conference is organized by the Bible Society of Uganda in partnership with Life Ministry Uganda.
Justice Chibita emphasized that unhealthy relationships create emotional, social, and mental challenges that affect everyone involved.
He argued that while laws exist to address marital issues, their implementation often comes too late, highlighting the importance of proactively equipping young couples.
The conference, which will bring together over 300 young married couples and those contemplating marriage from all major Christian denominations, will be held under the theme “Equipped for Christian Marriage.”
The Vice President of the Bible Society of Uganda, Rev. Canon Rebecca Nyegenye, explained that the initiative seeks to reduce divorce rates, noting that many couples pursue separation over minor issues rather than addressing deeper relational challenges.
Paul Bosson, Chairman of the Marriage Conference Steering Committee, said that attendees will gain practical guidance on building strong Christian marriages, with a lineup of speakers led by Chief Speaker, retired Archbishop of Uganda, Rt. Rev. Henry Luke Orombi.
The aim of the conference is to engage religious leaders at various levels to curb rising divorce cases and encourage young people to embrace Christian marriage.
This is not the first such conference; previous editions have been held in districts including Gulu, Mbale, Mbarara, Kabale, and Fort Portal, with Kampala hosting the latest edition.
