UPDF, FARDC Strike ADF Camp in DRC, Free 12 Captives in Operation Shujaa

Maj. Gen Stephen Mugerwa, overall commander of Operation Shujaa

The joint forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have intensified operations against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, striking a rebel camp west of River Epulu and recovering a significant cache of weapons and bomb-making materials.

The operation led to the seizure of weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a milling machine, and other equipment. Several ADF fighters were killed during the assault, while others fled with injuries.

Maj. Gen Stephen Mugerwa, overall commander of Operation Shujaa, is overseeing the offensive and coordinating directly with field units, pledging to maintain pressure on the insurgents until they are decisively neutralized.

During the latest offensive, 12 captives were freed around Ofayee near the Ndimo area.

The former captives reported harsh conditions, including forced labor and physical abuse, during their captivity.

Security forces continue to pursue remnants of the group that escaped from the River Epulu camp, a key ADF hideout, which officials described as being caught by surprise in the assault.

Operation Shujaa, launched in November 2021, is a joint military offensive by the UPDF and FARDC targeting ADF elements operating in the Kivu and Ituri regions.
