The Uganda Prisons Service has identified three people killed in a shooting at Kiboga Government Prison in Kiboga District.
In a statement issued by Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine, the deceased were named as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, the Deputy Officer-in-Charge; Principal Officer Bright Akishuri, the third in command; and Sarah Ayebare, the spouse of the Officer-in-Charge of Kiboga Government Prison.
According to Baine, the suspect has been identified as Prison Warder Moses Anguyo, who allegedly opened fire on his supervisors at around 10:00 a.m. before fleeing the facility.
Police were immediately notified and secured the scene of crime. Joint security teams have since launched operations to track down the suspect. Although the firearm used in the attack has been recovered, the suspect remains at large and is considered dangerous. Authorities have urged members of the public to share any information that could lead to his arrest.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said the Deputy Officer-in-Charge and the third in command were conducting routine inspection and supervision when they found Anguyo using his phone and chatting on WhatsApp, contrary to prison duty procedures.
The officers reportedly cautioned him and moved away, unaware that he had not taken the warning in good faith. Investigators say Anguyo later followed the supervisors and opened fire, killing three people instantly, including the Officer-in-Charge’s wife who was within the vicinity of the shooting.
Security personnel from the police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces responded and reinforced security at the prison facility.
Authorities confirmed that three other individuals were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at hospital, though their identities have not been disclosed.
Earlier, Kiboga Resident District Commissioner Ssempala Kigozi had indicated that three injured victims were rushed to hospital following the shooting.
Investigations are ongoing as the search for the suspect continues.
