NUP Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi Remanded to Kitalya Prison as Terrorism Case Investigations Continue

NUP Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi Remanded to Kitalya Prison

The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Butambala has further remanded National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for the Buganda region, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, to Kitalya Maximum Security Prison until March 10, 2026, as the State seeks more time to complete investigations into terrorism-related charges.

Kivumbi appeared before Chief Magistrate Deogratious Ssejjemba, the same court where he was first arraigned following his arrest on January 22, 2026.

He arrived at the court premises at around 9:00 AM alongside 24 co-accused persons.

Prosecution alleges that between January 12 and 17, 2026, Kivumbi and his associates attacked Kibibi Police Station in Butambala and a tallying centre in Gombe at the district headquarters.

The alleged attacks reportedly resulted in the deaths of seven people and the destruction of seven vehicles, with authorities claiming the actions were intended to destroy public facilities.

On February 3, an additional 24 suspects were added to the terrorism case.

The group had initially faced separate charges, but the court later consolidated the files into a single case, naming Kivumbi as the principal accused.

By the start of proceedings, the accused persons and their legal team — including lawyers Medard Ssegona, Erias Lukwago, Jude Mbabali, and Kenneth Paul Kakande — were present in court awaiting the session.

Security at the court premises was significantly heightened compared to previous hearings.

A large crowd of supporters and relatives gathered outside, though access to the courtroom was initially restricted before some were later allowed entry.

Tensions briefly escalated outside the court when supporters confronted Kibuga Councillor Kanalemwa Nsubuga Ali, accusing him of cooperating with investigators.

A scuffle ensued, during which he was reportedly dragged by members of the crowd before police intervened and escorted him away amid hostile chants.

The case was adjourned to allow further investigations.
