Electoral Commission Sets February 4 for Re-Run of Local Government Elections in Affected Areas

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama

The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled local government elections on February 4, 2026, in areas where voting was not conducted or concluded during the previous polls.

In a circular dated January 31, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said the elections will cover positions including chairpersons, directly elected councillors, women councillors, and councillors representing Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

The exercise will take place at city and district levels, as well as in municipalities, city divisions, sub-counties, towns, and municipal divisions.

Justice Byabakama explained that the decision applies only to electoral areas where polls failed to occur or were not completed on the scheduled dates due to unforeseen issues, including ballot paper errors and related irregularities.

In Arua City, for instance, elections for the Bazaar Ward female councillor seat were cancelled after ballot papers were found to display the wrong name and photograph of a candidate.

The two contenders—Zuria Adukudua Gutru of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Zabibu Alias of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)—had previously expressed disappointment over the irregularities.

The EC said polling will be conducted at all designated polling stations in the affected areas, with electoral colleges used for SIG elections. Voting is set to run from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., after which counting will begin immediately, followed by the declaration of results.
