Police in Kira Municipality have arrested 10 suspected members of criminal gangs during a late-night operation aimed at curbing crime in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The operation was conducted on January 29, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m. by officers from Kira Police Division, in coordination with sister security agencies, in the Buwate–Najjera area.
According to police, the suspects were found red-handed inside a wooden structure while smoking substances suspected to be narcotics. Exhibits recovered from the scene included rolled sticks and powdered leaves believed to be narcotic substances.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly consume narcotics before engaging in criminal activities, including waylaying pedestrians and stoning moving vehicles within the municipality.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, said the suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue. A case of possession of narcotic substances, to wit opium, has been registered against them.
SP Kawala added that similar operations will continue during and after the election period to ensure public safety and security across the metropolitan area.
