NUP to drag EC to court for overturning Mukono District Chairperson’s sit elections

Members of Parliament from the Opposition National Unity Platform in Mukono district have called up on the Electoral Commission to rectify their mistake that led to the annulment of their victory for the position of the Mukono district Chairperson on Friday or face the legal process.

Mukono district on Friday last week witnessed a dramatic scene when the Returning Officer Emily Amongin first declared NUP’s Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga, winner for the Mukono district Chairperson race with 51,686 votes beating his NRM Opponent who garnered 50,254 votes.

The NRM Chairperson Hajji Harunah Ssemakula immediately forced himself into the Returning Officer’s office and held a closed meeting that lasted for over two hours and after the Returning Officer came back with fresh results that saw NRM’s Francis Lukooya Mukoome winner with 52,523 votes whereas Muyanja had only 52,105 in the second declaration.

Abdallah Kiwanuka, the Member of Parliament for Mukono North Constituency has termed the act unconstitutional and vows to reclaim their victory in courts of law.

Kiwanuka has also raised alarm to police to expedite Investigations into reliable information got from EC officials that on Saturday night, His opponent also former state Minister for water Ronald Kibuule sent his UPDF henchmen to break into EC stores and stuff ballots into their boxes to gain ground for claiming a recount.

The Woman Member of Parliament elect for Mukono district Sheila Amaniyo Draville has warned Electoral Commission that anomalies cited in the election process demean the true meaning of democracy.
