NUP’s Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro Remanded Until January 22, Missing January 15 Elections

National Unity Platform’s Deputy Spokesperson and Nakawa East parliamentary candidate, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro

National Unity Platform’s Deputy Spokesperson and Nakawa East parliamentary candidate, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, will miss voting for himself in the upcoming January 15, 2026, general elections after the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court further remanded him until January 22, 2026.

Mufumbiro, who has been on remand for 78 days without trial, faces charges of incitement to violence, which he denies. He has been detained at Nakawa Court while awaiting trial.

Additionally, he faces separate charges in Kawempe Court over alleged involvement in prohibited military drills, alongside ten other individuals.

On Tuesday, Mufumbiro, through his lawyer Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa, applied for Mandatory Bail, arguing that his continued detention violates his constitutional rights to personal liberty and justice.

The prosecution, led by Mahatma Odongo, opposed the bail application, citing incomplete police investigations and public interest in denying bail. These same reasons had led to a bail denial in December 2025.

Magistrate Namanya stated that he needs time to consider the principles governing mandatory bail and, as a result, postponed the decision until January 22, 2026 one week after the elections.

Mufumbiro, who is the NUP flag bearer, is expected to compete in the hotly contested Nakawa East parliamentary race against other political party candidates and independents.

In addition, Mufumbiro is scheduled to appear in Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya tomorrow, Wednesday, alongside ten other jailed NUP supporters.

These individuals are linked to an alleged military parade staged for NUP Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s birthday in February 2025.

The other individuals facing charges in this case are: Edward Ssebufu (also known as Eddie Mutwe), Achileo Kivumbi, Doreen Kaija (Principal of the NUP Leadership School), Saudah Madada (who was absent today), Calvin Tasi (alias Bobi Giant), Edwin Sserunkuma (alias Eddy King Kabejja), Sharif Lukenge, Yasin Nyanzi, Tonny Kaweesi, and Olivia Lutaya, the last to be arrested in this group.

The prosecution alleges that on February 12, 2025, at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, Wandegeya, Kawempe Division, the accused persons conducted unauthorized military drills, violating Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act.

Additionally, they face a second charge of conspiring to commit a felony under Section 363 of the Penal Code Act.
