Justice Byabakama insists on voters leaving the polling station after polls

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama

The Electoral Commission (EC) insists that citizens should go home after casting their votes to ensure a smooth and peaceful election process come 15th January.

However, they advise voters to come back during tarrying time.

EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, while addressing journalists at Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) offices in Mengo during IRCU interaction with top officials from EC and Uganda police in regards to the forthcoming general elections, Byabakama said that this measure aims to minimize disruptions and allow voters to exercise their right to vote without hassle.

Byabakama, revealed that it’s true the law allows people to stay 20 meters away from the polling station but due to previous violent incidents at polling stations including 2021 general elections, Kawempe North By-elections among others they have prompted for the decision to have all electorates off the polling station immediately after casting the vote.

He also called on candidates to avoid rallying voters to stay at the polling station, as it may jeopardize their victory.
