The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader and presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has defended his initiative encouraging Ugandans to display the national flag.
Speaking at a rally in Lutete Cell, Lukaya Town Council, Kyagulanyi described the national flag as a symbol of patriotism that every Ugandan should embrace.
This comes as a section of government officials have criticized the use of the flag by opposition members, particularly its display on boda bodas and businesses.
Some have claimed that the flag is being misused, with the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba; warning on social media that anyone caught misusing the flag would face legal action.
In response, Kyagulanyi argued that the government has failed for years to effectively promote patriotism, despite spending large sums of taxpayers’ money.
He suggested that instead of criticizing his campaign, the government should thank him for successfully rallying Ugandans to show their love for the country through the flag.
Kyagulanyi emphasized that his initiative, which has seen thousands of Ugandans proudly display the flag, is a more effective symbol of national unity.
Meanwhile, according to the National Flag and Armorial Ensigns Act, makes insulting the flag an offense, punishable by up to two years in prison, it also empowers the Minister to regulate flag usage and specifies that unauthorized display is unlawful.
