UHRC Urges Protection of Children’s Rights During 2026 Elections

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), in partnership with key organizations including UNICEF Uganda, the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE Uganda), the Uganda Child Rights NGO Network (UCRNN), and UNICEF, has called on all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of children’s rights during the upcoming 2026 general elections.

At a joint press briefing held at the UHRC headquarters in Kampala, Commissioner Lamex Apitta Omara, representing the Commission’s Chairperson, emphasized the need to safeguard children from harm, exploitation, and exposure to political activities.

The Commission issued a statement urging political actors, the media, parents, and the general public to ensure children are kept away from electoral spaces and not used in political campaigns.

It highlighted the potential dangers of involving children in rallies, campaign activities, or political advertisements, stressing that their safety and well-being must remain a top priority.

The materials developed in collaboration with UNICEF and other partners emphasize the need for child-friendly electoral campaigns, addressing issues such as teenage pregnancies, malnutrition, and violence against children.

Additionally, the Commission reminded the public to report any violations through available help lines, reinforcing the message that protecting Uganda’s children must be at the forefront of the electoral process.
