Government Releases Shs 24bn for Compensation of National Oil Palm Project Affected Persons

Minister of State for Agriculture, Fred Bwino Kyakulaga

The government has released Shs24 billion to compensate individuals whose land was affected by the National Oil Palm project.

This follows President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s directive to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries to work alongside the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development to verify the list of project-affected persons in Buvuma and Sango Bay, Kyotera District.

Speaking to the press at the Uganda Media Centre, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Fred Bwino Kyakulaga, explained that the Shs24 billion is part of a larger Shs54 billion allocated for compensating affected individuals. The compensation will be made in phases.

Minister Kyakulaga detailed that out of the Shs24 billion released, Shs14 billion will go towards compensating Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in Buvuma, while Shs10 billion will be used for those in Sango Bay, Kyotera District.

So far, 1,405 people in Buvuma District are set to receive compensation, with 301 individuals having already been fully paid. In Sango Bay, verifications are still ongoing.

The minister urged affected persons to remain patient, assuring them that all compensation will be completed soon.
