Uganda has unveiled an innovative project aimed at accelerating the delivery of humanitarian aid across Africa by introducing smart number plates for World Food Programme (WFP) cargo trucks.
The new plates, powered by the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), are designed to streamline cross-border operations and enable faster relief delivery to those in need.
The smart plates feature advanced technology, including QR codes and unique identifiers, which allow real-time tracking of the trucks.
This system ensures swift movement across Uganda and beyond, bypassing bureaucratic delays and eliminating registration issues at borders.
With over 1,000 trucks expected to participate, the initiative will significantly reduce response times during emergencies, enabling the WFP to deliver aid quickly across East and Southern Africa.
Joseph Tumwine of ITMS emphasized the importance of the smart plates in improving logistics for humanitarian efforts.
He noted that the system will play a crucial role in enhancing efficiency, especially in times of crisis.
Beyond aiding relief efforts, the project positions Uganda as a central logistical hub for Africa.
It is expected to create jobs, boost the local economy, and further solidify Uganda’s role in regional humanitarian operations.
