The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has expressed concern over the rising spread of misinformation ahead of the 2026 general elections, particularly in the central region and other parts of the country.
The warning was issued by UHRC Executive Director Mariam Wangadya during a joint press conference with key stakeholders involved in managing the upcoming elections.
She noted that falsehoods and biased reporting are increasingly being used to stoke anxiety among the public.
Wangadya further expressed concern over some mainstream media houses, which she said have recently published narratives aimed at discrediting the electoral process.
According to her, these narratives are often false, exaggerated, or selectively framed.
She specifically highlighted claims of police brutality against certain candidates circulating in select media outlets, stating that such reports have not been corroborated by facts but are being amplified recklessly.
Wangadya warned that such conduct undermines public confidence and threatens the integrity of the electoral process.
The UHRC chief called on the media to uphold professionalism, responsibility, objectivity, and accuracy, emphasizing that journalists serve as a critical bridge between institutions and citizens.
