Bangladesh officials visit Uganda for benchmarking on Air quality

KCCA welcomes the delegation of Bangladesh officials in Uganda

A delegation from the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in South Asia led by Hassan Abdullah has visited KCCA to bench mark on how they manage air quality in the city.

The executive director of KCCA Sharifah Buzeki welcomed the delegation at the City Hall and presented to them processes employed to manage and keep Kampala city air quality better.

According to Buzeki’s explanation Kampala consistently recorded annual averages of between 30-60 micrograms per cubic meter exceeding the world health organization recommended limits but it’s said to be within the national card set by National Environment Management Authority which is 35 micrograms per cubic meters 2.5.

She adds that although Kampala is considered safe but as far as the world health organization records stand they still have a way to go with stronger interventions to keep Kampala safe for all.

She disclosed that among the sources of air pollution include emissions, open air burning of waste at home, cooking in houses with locked doors and windows, unpaved roads.

Among the interventions made by the authority include  developing an action plan on air quality , air monitors spread across the five divisions, investing in greening and re-greening the city to eradicate bad air, air quality champions in every division at least at every village ,promoting non motorized transport to reduce on emissions, digitalized monitoring of traffic ,vehicle inspections ,restricting approvals for heavy polluters ,collaborating with various partners etc .

The lord mayor Erias Lukwago through the secretary for health Olive Namazzi appealed to technical wing to ensure that the air quality budget is institutionalized to avoid set back once funder’s withdrawal their funding.

During their three day visit in Kampala the delegation will have a chance to visit a number of sites within Kampala and its surroundings.
