Pope Leo XIV Praises Caritas Internationalis for Service to the Poor

Pope Leo XIV today reaffirmed Caritas Internationalis’ central role in living out the Church’s mission to serve the most vulnerable.

Addressing members of the Representative Council of Caritas Internationalis at the Vatican, he said the organization “has always embodied the Church’s proclamation that Christ’s preference is for the poor, the least, the abandoned, and the discarded.”

The Pope expressed his gratitude to Caritas office bearers worldwide for their steadfast service, which continues to support the entire Church.

He emphasized that this commitment to the poor is reflected in the Eucharist itself, where the Lord, “having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end.”

Recalling his first address to the Diplomatic Corps, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the three pillars that sustain the Church’s work: peace, justice, and truth—values that guide the mission of Caritas offices around the world.

Concluding his address, the Pope prayed that Mary, Mother of the Poor, would intercede for Caritas members, helping them to “remain pilgrims of hope and artisans of peace,” and blessing them with the gifts of courage, perseverance, and joy.
