The Opposition National Unity Platform supporter also known as a foot soldier Olivia Lutaaya has today been arraigned before the Kanyanya Magistrates Court in Kawempe Division following her arrest last week.
She was charged over unlawful drills.
Olivia Lutaaya was arrested along with several other NUP supporters during the campaign trail of the party’s presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Bobiwine in Mbarara district when Kyagulanyi was heading to Bwizibwera for his final campaign rally.
Police however accused the group of assaulting officers, damaging police vehicles and obstructing law enforcement operations during the campaign procession.
However on Saturday the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, the Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya and the treasurer Benjamin Katana visited Mbarara Central Police Station where they found the detained supporters still handcuffed.
Ssenyonyi condemned the treatment of the suspects calling it inhumane and unlawful however he demanded for a full list of those arrested saying their lawyers and families needed to know their whereabouts.
Police noted that they were compiling and verifying the list of arrested individuals which would be shared with the party in due course though the party claims over 90 of their members were violently arrested.
Olivia Lutaaya is expected to be added on the same file comprising of other 11 NUP leaders and supporters battling charges of conducting unlawful drilling at the party headquarters during the celebration of the party president’s birthday.
Meanwhile, Olivia Lutaaya was last year released by the General Court Martial following a presidential pardon after spending three years on demand on treachery charges.
