The Anti- Corruption Court has halted proceedings against State Minister for Finance Planning and Economic Development Amos Lugoloobi in the Karamoja iron sheet case bringing an end to his two year legal battle.
Lugoloobi was arrested and charged in June 2023 on two counts of dealing with suspect property after allegedly diverting 700 iron sheets meant for vulnerable communities in Karamoja sub region.
Lugoloobi was among the several ministers and government officials linked to the Karamoja iron sheets saga in which relief material procured under the office of the Prime Minister were allegedly distributed to politicians and other government officials.
However during his defense earlier this year, Lugoloobi denied all the charges and told Court that he was being unfairly targeted and that he had already returned the iron sheets following the directive from the President.
Minister Lugoloobi also questioned why other ministers who received the material including the Finance Minister Matia Kasaija and state minister Henry Musasizi were not prosecuted.
It should be noted that in 2023, the DPP by then Jane Frances Abodo declined to sanction files against other government officials noting lack of sufficient proof and evidence.
In today’s ruling the presiding judge Justice Jane Kajuga formally terminated the proceedings after the DPP entered a “nolle prosequi” a legal notice satisfying the state’s decision to discontinue prosecution.
