Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Government to Address Unregulated Online Medical Sales

Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga

The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the government to take action against unprofessional individuals selling medical products online, citing the significant risks they pose to public health.

Mayiga made the appeal during the official opening of the Non-Communicable Disease Center (NCDC) at Mengo Hospital.

He emphasized that online sellers, whose professional credentials remain largely unverified, present a serious threat due to the potential dangers of unsafe or counterfeit medications.

The Katikiro also cautioned the public against the dangers of self-medication, urging them to seek proper medical guidance before using any form of treatment.

In his remarks, Mayiga praised Mengo Hospital for establishing the new center, which aims to offer screening and treatment services for common non-communicable diseases, helping to improve health outcomes in the region.

Dr. William Lumu, Head of Endocrinology and Non-Communicable Diseases at Mengo, also addressed the audience, encouraging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles.

He stressed the importance of regular exercise, balanced diets, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and smoking as key measures in preventing non-communicable diseases.
